How is commercial composting different from home composting?

Commercial facilities have compost piles that are much larger and achieve much higher heat than those you would reach in your own home composting efforts. As a result, they can take products such as meat and dairy along with other organic waste, and then appropriately break them down into nutrient-rich compost without any pathogens. In non-commercial composting at home, you should never add meat or dairy products to your compost.

Waitlist for FREE Home Compost Bins - Available in August 2024

To encourage home composting, Pomona residents are eligible to receive a free compost bin by attending a Smart Gardening Workshop hosted by Los Angeles County Public Works. Due to the popularity of this program, City staff are currently putting residents on a waitlist and will be able to begin delivering compost bins again starting August 2024.

Workshops are held in-person and via webinars online, and attendance is free of charge. You are only required to attend the presentation for education on composting. The County offers a bin that they sell. However, you will not need to purchase a bin since the City will provide you with a free bin that is delivered to your home. How to Obtain a Free Compost Bin (Currently placing residents on a waitlist)

POMONA RESIDENTS CAN OBTAIN A COMPOST BIN BY:

Email us at RecycleYourFood@pomonaca.gov.
Include your address, phone number, the date that you completed a Smart Gardening workshop, and if you attended in-person or through an online webinar.
City staff will notify you when the compost bins are in stock and can be delivered. The next order will be available in August 2024.

FREE Compost Giveaway Events

If you cannot compost at home, Athens Services provides free compost to residents two times during the year. The next compost giveaway event will occur on October 12 at Palomares Park. Select the date of the event to view the flyer.
