FAQ

Why are my waste and recycling services changing?

The City of Pomona is implementing a source-separated waste and recycling program to comply with Senate Bill (SB) 1383—a state law requiring the diversion of organics waste from landfills.

What is Senate Bill (SB) 1383?

SB 1383, California’s Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Strategy, was passed to reduce methane and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions statewide. All jurisdictions, including the City of Pomona, are mandated to require residents and businesses to separate their organics waste through ordinances and enforcement mechanisms. Learn more about SB 1383 here

What changes can I expect starting on July 1?

All Pomona customers will be required to have separate containers for recycling, organics, and trash.

Residential customers: Continue to use your existing containers. Contact Athens Services to adjust your current services.

Commercial customers: An Athens Services representative will work with all businesses and multifamily property owners to determine the appropriate level of service. Contact Athens Services if any service adjustments are needed.

Who do I pay for waste and recycling collection services?

All payments for waste collection services will be made directly to Athens Services beginning July 1.

Will pick-up days change?

Residential customers: No. There will be no changes to collection schedules at this time. Continue to place your containers curbside on your regular service day.

Commercial customers: Yes. Changes to current collection schedules may occur to enhance routing efficiency.

Any changes to collection schedules for either residential or commercial customers will be communicated thirty (30) days prior to a change.
