Pomona Seal Hazard Mitigation Plan Update 2021

City of Pomona Local Hazard Mitigation Plan available for public comment

The City of Pomona has initiated the update of its Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP). The LHMP will provide a framework for the City to reduce its vulnerability to the impacts of disasters such as earthquakes, fires and windstorms. The plan will identify opportunities for the City to be more resilient to hazards in the future. Draft documents are available for review starting April 11, 2022, for a two week period. Please see the following draft document: https://www.pomonaca.gov/Home/Components/News/News/76/14.

If you have questions, please email Naela Cansino at naela.cansino@pomonaca.gov

To help ensure that the City of Pomona can protect its residents and businesses from natural and manmade hazards, the City has adopted a Local Hazard Mitigation Plan, or “LHMP.” The current LHMP covers a range of hazards that have historically affected Pomona, including:

  • Earthquakes
  • Landslides
  • Wildfire
  • Flooding
  • Windstorms

In the update, the City will be adding two new topics: Climate Change and Pandemic.

The LHMP describes these hazards and lays out how the City and other local partners can work to either reduce hazards or to help address their impacts when disasters occur. Having an LHMP in place helps direct City resources appropriately and qualifies the City for federal disaster relief to assist in post-disaster recovery.

The current LHMP was adopted in 2012. The current 2012 Pomona LHMP is available for downloading below

Five-Year Hazard Mitigation Plan Update

The City of Pomona is updating the Local Hazard Mitigation Plan to cover the period from 2022 to 2026. Working with partner agencies (schools, police, fire, hospitals, etc.), the City will ensure that potential hazards are properly identified, and that appropriate measures to protect the public are included in the plan. To address modern conditions, Climate Change and Pandemic will also be added.

The updated LHMP is tentatively scheduled to be presented to the City Council for adoption in late 2021.

Public Input is Important

Public involvement plays an important role in the LHMP update. The City is interested in how our residents view the hazards affecting Pomona, how you are affected, and steps you have taken to stay safe when disaster happens.

The public will have many opportunities to provide input, including public meetings (virtual or in-person, depending on COVID-19 restrictions) and an online survey. Before the updated LHMP is adopted, the public will also have the opportunity to review and comment on the draft Plan.
