How to Call the Police & What to Say

When you call the Pomona Police Department and request a Police Officer, you will be asked a series of questions by a Police Dispatcher. These questions are designed to insure a more effective response.

Try to remain calm and answer the questions as best you can. The Dispatcher acts as the officer's eyes and ears before they arrive on scene of a crime or a call for service.  Some of our questions may seem redundant and unnecessary however, they are pertinent to insure our officers and citizens are safe.

Here are some of the questions you may be asked:

Why are you calling the police?

  • Are you calling to report a crime?
    • Is it in progress?
    • Has it already occurred?

  • Are you calling to report a traffic accident?
    • Are there injuries?
    • Is it a non-injury accident?
  • Are you calling to report a disturbance?
    • Is it a family dispute?
    • Is it a fight on the street?
    • Are there any guns?
  • Are you calling to report suspicious activity?
    • What kind?
    • Where?
  • What is the location?
    • What is the exact address, including street number and/or apartment number.
    • What is the cross street?
  • What is your name?
    • What telephone number are you calling from?
  • Are there any suspicious persons?
    • What is their description?
    • Do they have a weapon? What kind? (Rifle, gun, knife, etc)
    • Do they have a vehicle?
    • Make, model, color
    • License plate number
    • If they left, what direction did they go?
  • Suspect Description
    • How many? In which direction did they go?
  • Physical Description of involved parties including:
    • Sex
    • Age
    • Race
    • Height
    • Weight
    • Build
    • Hair Color
    • Eye Color
    • Facial Hair (Mustache? Beard?)
    • Complexion
  • What was the suspect wearing?
    • Accessories: Hat? Glasses?
    • Shirt: long or short Sleeve?
    • Jacket: leather or nylon?
    • Pants: long or short?
    • Shoes: Tennis? Dress? Boots?
    • Dress or skirt?
  • Do you want the police to contact you?

Remember: Although it seems like a lot of questions, an Officer is being sent to your address while you are talking to the Dispatcher.

Try to remain calm and do not hang up until the police have arrived, or you have been instructed to do so by the Dispatcher. Wait for the Police.
