Backflow Theft Prevention

There has been a recent increase in thefts of backflow devices due to the rising value of scrap metals like brass, copper, and aluminum. These thefts have mainly targeted devices 2 inches or smaller that are used for domestic water services in buildings. The stolen devices usually lacked enclosures or cages. It is possible that fire service backflow devices may also be targeted in the near future, specifically their brass valve stems, by-pass backflow device, or meter.

To prevent theft, we recommend visually checking your backflow devices to ensure that domestic and irrigation devices are protected by a lockable cage. For fire service devices, valve stem protectors are recommended. Taking proactive measures can save you a lot of money, as well as prevent water loss and possible non-occupancy of buildings until water is restored.
